How Intelligent Is Your Business?

I have recently been exposed to a whole new side of business operations and management. This underutilized tool combines accounting, finance, technology and operations. It makes smart companies smarter, and executives across the country and around the world are standing up and taking notice. You need to consider it for your business because being smart means moving fast. And for entrepreneurs, and companies that want to compete like they are entrepreneurs, precisely extracted information means serious business horsepower. What is this new magic bullet? In a phrase, “Business Intelligence."

These Guys Know Parking

I always recommend that people and companies position themselves as world-class experts (see http://tinyurl.com/2dqrykh). Pick a niche that you can be great at, go after that niche ferociously, and make sure the world knows you're one of the best at the tiny little niche that you have picked. There's more money in niches and it’s the best way to stand out. Unfortunately, many entrepreneurs are nervous to limit the scope of their services because they worry they will miss out on something. But it is well known that you'll make a lot more money in the long run when you specialize, because you will have less competition, better brand recognition, and you will produce better results when you do the work that you are best at. Should the Concept of Estate Tax Apply to Big Corporations?

The founding fathers of this country, and many of the leaders that followed, watched the wealth accumulated by the early industrialists such as Getty, Rockefeller and Carnegie. Our country’s leaders did not want any person or family to acquire so much wealth that they became more powerful than the government — or so rich that they could challenge it. For this reason, the founders of our taxation system brought this concept to life with the Estate Tax in 1916. In this way, the estate tax, or “anti-accumulation of wealth tax,” keeps us all safe from excessive growth of a small few.

Can Lone Wolves Cooperate?

A few days ago, I shared my view on how entrepreneurs are being squeezed out in this economy - even more so than our bigger company counter-parts who have also been struggling. A lot of people agreed — and a few disagreed – but this topic created a lot of discussion. Now I want to put forth a strategy for entrepreneurs to embrace. One which could help all of us overcome this mess.

Do You Want To Join Us At The Consumer Electronics Show In Las Vegas?

Next week, I'm going to the Consumer Electronics Show with my son. He and I are both avid electronics buffs, and we are anxious to see all of the new gadgets that are on their way out for the year 2010 and beyond. In the last 20 years, I've been to CES at least 15 times so I'm used to the flow of how products come out, make their debut, and then eventually end up on the department store shelves for consumers to buy. For example, I remember in 1998 I saw the first flat-screen TV's, which were completely revolutionary for that time. I recall that a 30-inch flat screen TV was about $30,000. Now, that same television is available for under $500. It really demonstrates how product launches and rollouts dance with price over time.

Couldn't Everybody Use A Buddy?

This weekend our family saw the new movie "The Blind Side", starring Sandra Bullock. What an extraordinary and uplifting movie! Her performance was great, and there were a couple of other breakout roles that you will recognize when you see the movie. But, this column isn't about the movie. The column is about the social commentary that the movie presents.
