Growing Your Business: Strategic Networking for CEOs

The chief executive officer of any company has two primary responsibilities. First, the CEO's primary job is to get people to bet on the company, and second is to give the people who work inside the company the resources to make good on the promises that the CEO has made to outsiders. These two concepts encompass all of the duties of any CEO. They are primary and they need to be front and center at all times.
One of the best ways for any CEO to accomplish these two objectives is to make sure that he or she has a very strong and powerful network. It's not enough to simply meet people in order to establish a network. In order to build a strong and powerful network it has to be done deliberately and on purpose. This is a skill that is lost, not only on many CEOs, but also on most other executives who work in business today.
Networking strategically means understanding who you are going to meet and who you want to meet in order to accomplish the business objectives that you have. It means planning your outings and deliberately choosing which people you enter into relationships with so that both of you can further your objectives.
This is of the utmost importance not only to permanent CEOs, but especially to interim CEOs who are in the process of guiding a transition or assisting the company for any temporary period of time. Being able to bring short term resources to bear with great speed improves results to a company and brings even more value to an interim CEO's complex assignment. However, having a quiver full of outstanding resources who can be delivered on a moment's notice is especially important in the short term assignment.
There are several interim CEO organizations, but the one which I'm the most familiar with is run by my friend, Bob Jordan. Bob has a network consisting of hundreds of interim CEOs who move from company to company, guiding them on a short term basis. Bob's organization is found at www.InterimCEO.com and it has been a source of both referrals and friends for me over the past year that he's had the website.
Bob is planning a conference in the near future to bring CEOs together so they can network with each other along with networking with vendors and resources who can supply instant talent and instant services to such companies. If you are someone who supplies services to companies and you want to be considered for inclusion in the network that Bob has built, either as a sponsor or a friend of the organization, then you should immediately contact www.InterimCEO.com.
If your goal is to network strategically, then you have to go where you want to meet the people who can make the biggest difference to your business or career. This is a great place to demonstrate your worth and it's a powerful place for the CEOs who are part of this organization to become aware of you.
Remember that the CEO has to deliver on promises that he or she makes, and having many tools, resources, and access to the right people on short notice can be one of the most important resources that that CEO has. So, as you are working hard every day to build your company, or as you're building your career, be sure to network with people who run companies. Be strategic. Create relationships deliberately with people who you can help the most and that can help you as much as possible.
