Hollywood's Got Money For You

The city of Los Angeles could lose billions of dollars over the writers' strike that's just about a month old. The writers are holding out for another $130 million, but the cost to vendors, suppliers and contractors of the industry is potentially astronomical - many times greater than the amount that the writers are asking for. The ripple effect of shutting down this core industry is almost incalculable.

I've been talking recently about deal flow and the deal business with my financing friends - these are the people who put up money for businesses, films, TV shows, and other types of activities. Everybody agrees that with the current economy (which has been affected by the sub-prime mortgage problems) there are many opportunities for special groups of people. Unbelievably, there is lots of money sitting on the sidelines - and the money would flow - if there were only deals to throw money at. There's lots of money in the economy, but not very many good deals.

The film community feels the same way. People who finance television and film are very concerned because the scripts are running out for television shows. And there's not a lot of activity in the can that is ready to go for films after a few months from now. Therefore, a tremendous opportunity exists for people who are filmmakers, and for those who wish that they were.

Take this opportunity, if you are a filmmaker, to submit your scripts and projects to the people who finance these projects, because now is the time to make it happen. These people are flush with cash and they are looking for projects.

The problem that they describe to me is that most of the projects they see have a business plan that is so weak that they can't make any sense of it. Even if the project has an excellent script, it is usually the lack of a strong business plan that prevents the film from getting funded. Take time to make sure that the plan that you design for your film is excellent and well thought out. If it is, then it should be well-received by the people who could write you the checks to make your deals come to life.

If you need any help with any of this material, please contact our office by e-mail (newsletters@joelblock.com). We'd be happy to give you some direction about organizing your plan in a way that will make it possible for film financing people to write a check with your name on it. The industry - and all of the people who support it - needs your creative materials. So let the writers' loss be your gain and get your hands on some Hollywood money right now to get your film produced.
