One Less Problem

Sometimes we just have to go back to the basics and remember what the simple lessons are that have made us very good at what we do, and that have brought us to the place where we sit now. I was talking this morning with a good friend of mine who reminded me of a little saying that he has. That saying is, "when someone comes in my office, I promise them that they'll leave with at least one less problem."
What a great motto. Make it your goal to provide exceptional service to the people who come into your office. Make it your goal to serve them and be a resource - not a vendor. Keeping in mind the terrific attitude of helping them to leave your office with one less problem than they came in with is a wonderful goal for you to strive for. If you tell your "people" that they should strive to help the people in their world to leave a conversation or an encounter with one less problem, then all of us would start to see our problems abate - and more opportunities would come our way.
I can also tell you that when you help someone to solve a problem, you create a certain amount of emotional debt. Even if somebody pays you money to help make a problem go away they perceive that you have great capabilities to help them because you've lightened their load and you've made their day more cheerful. If it's a big problem you probably solved something that's been keeping them awake at night and interfering with their ability to really enjoy their life.
So sometimes you just have to go back to the basics. Remember the attitudes that got you where you are today, including your ability to just help somebody make a simple problem go away.
