Growing Your Business: If You're Not Out There, You're Out Of There

I recently gave a presentation to a group of professional people who are service providers in the Southern California area. One of the people in the audience is the owner of a dozen pizza restaurants and is a franchisee of a major distributor. I couldn't really understand why he was part of this group and what he was doing. So, after the meeting, I pulled him aside to ask him.
He said that he believes it's critical for him to be "out there" and in the marketplace in order for him to continue to grow his business.
Now, I'm a big believer that you have to be "out there," but I didn't see the correlation between his pizza restaurant and the audience of service providers that were in this network group. He told me that by participating in chambers of commerce and other organized networking environments that some fantastic opportunities have come about for him. Namely, in the last two weeks he met someone who owned a bowling alley.
He was successful in ousting the provider of pizzas that the bowling alley was using and substituted his company instead; and they now are supplying 300 pizzas a week to that bowling alley. Second, he met a director at a university who was in his community. As a result of this discussion, they now are in talks about putting a pizza parlor on campus, and it would be targeted at the captive audience of students.
It just never ceases to amaze me how many opportunities are out there for us to take advantage of if we get "out there" and make it happen. This gentleman is "out there" and making it happen. He's serious about his networking activities, and he's getting a lot of benefit from it.
So, as you are working hard every day to build your company, or as you're building your career, make sure you're "out there" telling people your story, networking, growing your business, and working the community hard…because if you're not, then you're going to find yourself "out of there" right away.

Joel -
I hear stories like this every day. Even more so with people who are going a step further and building correlate LinkedIn networks. The opportunities just expand exponentially. Part of the excitement is that when you discover new "niches" like the pizza guy did, you can research if there are other similar opportunities in your network. We train people to do just this. I'm enjoying your insights tremendously. Let me know if I can be a LinkedIn resource for you!
